Tigers fire general manager DETROIT (AP) Detroit Tigers general manager Jerry Walker was fired Monday by owner Mike Hitch and replaced on an interim basis by scouting director Joe Klein.

Hitch said at a hastily called news conference that the surprise -move came about because of what he termed a lack of communication between himself and Walker. "I want to emphasize that this is was not an easy decision," Hitch said. "But I felt that it had to be made in the best interests of the team." Walker, the former director of scouting for the Tigers, was promoted to general manager shortly after Hitch bought the team late in the 1992 season. Hitch said he tried to integrate two different organizations and it "hasn't worked out as I had planned." Cowboys rate as big favorites LONDON (AP) British bookmakers Monday installed the Dallas Cowboys as odds-on favorites to repeat as Super Bowl champions. Ladbrokes listed the Cowboys at 1-6 to win next Sunday's game at Atlanta against the Buffalo Bills.

The Bills were listed at 7-2. "We rate the Bills as the biggest underdogs since Joe Namath's Jets in Super Bowl III," Ladbrokes spokeman Paul Austin said. "Indeed, we offer exactly half of the odds for the Cowboys we offered a -year ago." In last year's Super Bowl, the Cowboys beat the Bills 52-1 7. Nuggets won't trade Ellis DENVER (AP) The Denver Nuggets are interested in acquiring Danny Manning, but they won't trade LaPhonso Ellis for him. "We definitely have no interest in trading LaPhonso," general manager Bernie Bickerstaff said Sunday.

"We think he's going to be an excellent basketball player." Reports over the weekend said Ellis was among a number of players NBA teams have offered the Los Angeles Clippers for Manning. Manning's contract expires this summer, and he has said he won't sign with the Clippers. To trade for Manning, the Nuggets would have to exchange players whose combined salaries are within 1 5 percent of Manning's $3.2 million Body identified as that of jockey Hansen ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) Human remains found in mud flats along San Francisco Bay were identified Monday as the decomposed body I of jockey Ron Hansen. Alameda County supervising coroner Dan Apperson said dental records were used to identify Hansen, whose remains were pulled from the Hayward mud flats last week.

The 33-year-old jockey had been missing since an Oct 2 car crash on the San Mateo Bridge. The cause of death won't be known for another three to six weeks, Apperson said. Police believe Hansen was driving his Jaguar when it smashed into aToyota on the bridge at a speed as high as 1 00 mph. salary. O'Sullivan tops track standings NEW YORK (AP) Ireland's Marcus O'Sullivan, unbeaten in the mile in four races this season, leads the men's overall standings in the Mobil indoor track and field Grand Prix circuit.

ITF upholds Agassi's suspension MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) The International Tennis Federa- -tion, rejecting an appeal by U.S. tennis officials, on Monday upheld its one-match Davis Cup suspension of Andre Agassi. Agassi was suspended for refusing to play his reverse singles match against the Bahamas in September because the best-of-5 contest already had been clinched by the Americans. Frenchman leads Monte Carlo Rally MONTE CARLO, Monaco (AP) Francois Delacour of France took advantage of an early exit by three-time champion Didier Auriol as Delecour led Monday after the first day of competition at the Monte Carlo Rally. Delacour, driving a Ford Escort, was in first in the overall standings after six timed stages with a lead of 22 seconds over Carlos Sainz of Spain in a Subaru. Juha Kankkunen of Finland, in a Toyota Celica, was 25 seconds back in third.

Cubs give Sosa $2.95 million pact CHICAGO (AP) Chicago Cubs outfielder Sammy Sosa avoided arbitration Monday by agreeing to a $2.95 million, one-year contract Sosa had sought $3.2 million in arbitration, and the Cubs had offered $2.7 million. Sosa was paid $745,000 last season, when he became the first Cub to hit 30 homers and steal 30 bases in the same year. He hit .261 with 33 homers and 93 RBIs, and stole 36 bases. Sosa was the last Cubs in arbitration.

(AP) Kansas State guard Askia Jones was named Big Eight player of the week after averaging 29 points in victories over top-ranked Kansas and Colorado. Jones, from San Antonio, leads the Big Eight in three-point shooting, averaging 3.8 per game.
